Football for Moms and Dinosaurs

Moms are amazing. They run the household, pay the bills, prepare the meals, chauffeur the kids, monitor grades and cell phone use, and probably hold down a job outside the home. They are capable, wise, and understanding. What they are not, though, is football savvy. How could they be? They have no firsthand knowledge of the game (only a fraction of 1 percent of women have played the game), and they see this male-dominated sport through the eyes of a woman. Expecting a woman to know football is like expecting a man to give qualified opinions on childbirth and PMS. Most women would not see this as a tragedy. Most would readily admit that they couldn’t care less about the sport. Then their sons get involved in football. Maternal interest and concern kick in, and moms suddenly have many questions and very few answers. Football for Moms answers many of these questions. The purpose of the work is not to make every mom an expert on football. The objectives of the book are to allay parents’ fears concerning their sons’ participation, to provide a basic understanding of the game, to explain football’s significance in the development of young men, and to reveal the beauty of this great game—Oh, and to provide a few laughs. Old coaches (the dinosaurs) should also enjoy the insights and stories. Many of these accounts will undoubtedly spark reminiscences from their coaching days.
