Publisher Description

Founded in 1848, the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was composed of influential and avant-garde artists who sought to "test and defy all conventions of art." Inspired by medieval culture, William Holman Hunt, John Everett Millais, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and other Pre-Raphaelites were drawn to the poetry of Tennyson as he frequently incorporated this in his subject matter, and several volumes of Tennyson works feature scenes illustrated by Pre-Raphaelite artists. In this 1866 collection, celebrated Tennyson poems like Mariana, The Lady of Shallott, and Ulysses are published alongside illustrations by Hunt, Millais, and Rossetti as well as other prominent artists of the day (including a young Winslow Homer).
