Pid, a dutiful Grom pilot, leads a mission to invade a seemingly peaceful green planet that has already swallowed twenty previous expeditions. In a society ruled by rigid caste and "shape-discipline," he expects obedience, not wonder—but the world below offers something far more dangerous than resistance: freedom. Sent to deliver a Displacer device to a guarded human reactor, Pid and his crew land under camouflage, lose their ship by design, and discover that survival depends on blending in, improvising, and confronting the mystery of the vanished expeditions. As Pid studies the target, he first tries human form, then chooses a sparrow, discovering the exhilaration of speed, perception, and transformation. His lower-caste companion Ger proves even less obedient than he seems, slipping into Dog shape and revealing that many earlier Grom have chosen to remain on the planet rather than return. Ilg, once thought lost, returns "Thinking" and confirms the shocking truth: Grom are born Shapeless, and the planet's real threat is not danger, but the possibility of becoming free.
