Mother Made Me

It was almost midday on the second day of our trip by the time I started feeling truly murderous towards Mother.

‘I read compulsively. Mother Made Me is superbly paced . . . its characters magnetic' - Sarah Moss, author of Ripeness

For crime writer Pat, her mother’s cruelty has long cast a shadow over her life. On a trip to Paris, she’s reaching breaking point, afraid of what she might do. Then, suddenly, Mother is found dead in their hotel.

And Pat is finally free.

Soon afterwards, Graham, Pat’s devoted former lover, returns to her side, and together they find a quiet happiness. But is it too good to be true? And what of the mysterious Cynthia, who appears out of the blue claiming to be Pat’s half-sister? Desperate to make sense of the shifting ground beneath her, Pat revisits the past. And soon, all directions lead to one terrible, inevitable question: what really happened that night in Paris?

Inspired by Patricia Highsmith’s difficult relationship with her own mother, Mother Made Me is a stylish and unputdownable mystery about delusion, devotion and the cost of true love.
