Publisher Description
A writer recounts his participation in a buried treasure expedition led by his former college acquaintance, Edgar Powell, a cautious manufacturer of unshrinkable flannels. Edgar has acquired a map from a deceased Portuguese sailor and insists on a practical, bloodless approach, much to the narrator's romantic disappointment. Their journey takes them from New York City to the New Jersey coast, where the narrator digs for hours under Edgar's watchful eye. When the spade finally strikes a rotten wooden box, Edgar claims the find for himself, leaving the narrator to wonder about the true nature of the treasure and the adventure's outcome.
