National History of the War

Complete with illustrations of battlefields and generals, National History of the War contains maps and histories of important battles and people of the American Civil War. Sometimes called "The War Between the States," the American Civil War was a conflict fought over the secession of many Southern states in the United States. Forming the Confederate States of America (the Confederacy), the Southern states fought for states' rights to uphold slavery as legal should its constituents vote accordingly. The Northern states, or the Union, waged war to abolish slavery and maintain the United States as it was before the Confederacy's secession. After four years of fighting, the Confederacy surrendered, and slavery was abolished in the entire nation with the passing of the Thirteenth Amendment.
