Oral Histories with the Acjachemem of San Juan Capistrano‪.‬

During the summers of 1970 and 1971 we (Frank and Susan) were both graduate students in anthropology at the University of Arizona when funding was made available for graduate students to carry out fieldwork. We successfully applied for a grant to work with the Acjachemem (also known as the Juaneno), Frank's tribal community of San Juan Capistrano in southern California. Both of us had years of previous experience in the community and knew almost all of the Acjachemem people there well. In fact, when we got right down to it, Frank was related in some manner to almost everyone. What was our motivation to carry out this work? The answer goes back many years for both of us.
