Purity Soule is a medium, a speaker with the dead. Since a child, she has been tormented by the last memories of the murdered who come to her seeking her aid to set right whatever binds them to the mortal world. The dead visit Purity at night. They touch her dreams with images of their own horrific deaths at the hands of humanity's darkest creatures.

When the lingering spirit of Bethany Smith, a girl drowned in a creek by her school-mates, comes searching for her, Purity takes the girl in. She willingly allows Bethany's wandering soul to possess her so that she can discover what force binds Bethany to the Void, the netherworld between life and death.

When Purity reaches out to the tormented girl, she finds Bethany walking the empty darkness of the Void. But their meeting is curtailed violently when they are attacked from the shadows by an enraged unseen entity. Purity instinctively retreats from the world not her own, pulling the girl out with her - not realizing the true depth of the depravity behind the Bethany's death, or face of evil left behind to lurks from the shadows.
