Publisher Description

Although first patented in 1790, the sewing machine was not produced until 1814 by Austrian tailor Josef Madersperger. In 1830, Bathelemy Thimonnier, a French tailor, patented a sewing machine that sewed straight seams using chain stitch. By 1841, Thimonnier had a factory with 80 machines sewing uniforms for the French Army. Since then, the sewing machine's design has constantly improved and its influence on the sewing industry continues to astonish.  This 1922 volume teaches the principles and construction of the sewing machine and how the new tool can be used in plain sewing, in the making of garments and in attaching lace.
