Publisher Description

Detective Inspector Elinor "Ellie" Pryce is thirty years old, autistic, and newly arrived in Aberystwyth on the west Wales coast a transfer she tells herself is a fresh start, though she is not entirely certain what a fresh start means for someone like her. Within days of arriving, she finds a cold case that has never let the town go: the drowning of Lowri Evans, twenty-three, ruled accidental five years ago, closed in thirty-one days by an investigation she quickly comes to believe was neither thorough nor honest.

What Ellie uncovers is a story about what small towns do with the people who challenge their arrangements. Lowri had obtained a suppressed environmental survey that would have blocked a powerful local developer's planning application a survey buried by his brother's company and replaced with a softer assessment. When Lowri told the developer she had the document, she was dead within nine days. The original investigation, conducted by a detective with undisclosed financial ties to the developer's network, was closed before the right questions were asked.

Ellie builds the case from its silences: an archive gap, a margin notes in different ink, a tidal testimony nobody acted on, a twenty-year-old text message on an undeleted phone. She works alongside Detective Sergeant Ewan Rhys a local man who knows what Bowen means in this town and says it anyway and against the grain of an institution that has learned to be careful around the same people Lowri was not careful enough around. All the while she navigates her strained relationship with her fiancé Emrys, the social labour of a new posting, and the difficulties of being someone who processes the world precisely and is rarely given the context she needs.

The resolution comes not through a confession or a single dramatic revelation but through accumulation: the physical evidence Lowri deliberately left a carving in a harbour boat shed, a letter to her father, a message to her best friend and the chain of people who kept what they had, waiting for someone to come who would use it. Ellie is that person. She arrives in a town of buried things, and she does not stop until they surface.
