Synopsis for String the Cranberries

String the Cranberries is a sweet and light romantic tale of two persons decidedly destined to be together. This story is about how they come together, their personal family struggles and the ties that bind them together.
Brandon is fresh out of the army around 2003 and living in the south side of Chicago. He goes to work for his uncle who is married to his aunt. He owns a barber shop and plans to teach Brandon how to do this. Brandon’s sister is married and has four children with one on the way. His parents are dead. He reads an ad in the paper and decides to respond. Thus he lands a job as a ranch hand in Wyoming. He sister wishes him well. He’s never been anywhere except the army, his parents stayed in their small little house or apartment forever, never trying anything new-so this is a big deal for him. He leaves after Christmas.
The west is pretty desolate in the winter and he sees an old run down house on the way into Cheyenne. He can’t believe there is shacks out here, too, just like Chicago. His new boss picks him up and tells him he owns the shack and everything around it for miles. They will fix it up. This happens to be Leia’s home he later realizes. First up, though, he works and learns his new trade the rest of the winter, and when he gets a break they head to town. That’s when Leia who has walked to town for miles to get groceries, because her jeep is broken down, sees someone sitting in the bar through the window. Later, after the store, she heads home and glances again to see the stranger, but he is not there. She continues the long road home when to her surprise he soon stops to help her. The innocent romance begins.
But it doesn’t last for too long as Brandon gets called away. Remember cell phones had not made their universal debut as yet. Not everyone had one as yet. He left a letter which she never received. Her mother is getting worse and saving her pain pills, so she can exit like her husband did by suicide. Leia’s mother is out under the old large tree for shade getting fresh air while sitting in her wheelchair. Leia goes to check on her after a couple hours and sees that she is slumped, not breathing, and no one is in sight. She falls from the chair and Leia clutches her, not aware of the apparent suicide, just death. She is beyond reviving, they have no phone and its miles away for help. She holds her lifeless mother as she breathes and lives for the unborn child within her. This tearfully sad moment is quite ironic and she is quite overcome in her short life.
With guidance and perseverance Leia is helped to give birth and later to find Brandon and tell him about the baby, whatever the fall out. She finds the letter he left and money for her, also other letters her mother hid. She eventually finds him back near Chicago at Christmas time. She surprises him but she is the one surprised for sure. He’s there with his sister and her five kids, while the sister is in a wheelchair after a horrible accident that killed her husband. Brandon is caring for all of them. He welcomes Leia and the child, his child.
A trip to the Grand Canyon and two train trips back and forth from Chicago to Wyoming and back again complete this novella of an American white cowboy who meets a half Native American girl. Heartfelt, unique, and simple these two find each other and make a family.
