INTRODUCTION The study by English Heritagein 2009 on illegal metal detecting and the heritage crime strategic assessment in 2010 undertaken by Russ Shopland, Principal Intelligence Analyst, Kent Police identified the lack of a co-ordinated approach to tackling crimes and anti-social behaviour (ASB) affecting half a million heritage assets. These projects also highlighted the under-reporting of such crimes, which in turn has an impact on prevention, intervention and prosecution. In particular the assessment prioritised:
