The Chapter Ends

On a rain-swept future Earth, star-traveling psychotechnician Jorun is tasked with overseeing humanity's evacuation before the planet is surrendered to a new interstellar order. As he registers families, comforts the fearful, and argues with the implacable Terran leader Kormt, he is forced to confront a painful divide: his mobile, galaxy-spanning civilization sees departure as progress, while Earth's people see it as the loss of home, memory, and identity. Through Jorun's encounters with Julith, a curious young girl who longs for one last day by the sea, the story reveals Earth as more than a refuge to be abandoned—it is the ancient measure of human life itself. Quiet beaches, old houses, and moonlit ruins frame a meditation on belonging, cultural survival, and the cost of "rescue" when it risks assimilation. As Jorun reflects on the shattered grandeur of Sol City and the vanished First Empire, he begins to question whether humanity's future can truly be separated from the world that made it.
