Thirteenth Child

An unlucky girl discovers her powers within a magical realm on the American frontier in this"fascinating" young adult historical fantasy (Tamora Pierce, #1 New York Times–bestselling author of Tempests and Slaughter).

As the thirteenth child in her family, Eff seems fated to be the unfortunate one. Some might even say cursed, because every time something bad happens, Eff shoulders the blame. It doesn't help that her twin brother, Lan, is the seventh son of a seventh son, born with a powerful gift for magic. Then Eff moves with her family to the North Plains Territory, on the edge of the Great Barrier Spell, where steam dragons and other magical creatures are protected within its fantastical boundaries. Turns out life on America's magical frontier is what you make it, and Eff's destiny might be more charmed than she ever imagined. . . .
