In 1736, French and Spanish geographers went on a ten-year mission to map the equator and determine the shape of the earth. This expedition produced the first accurate measurement of the equator, which is the horizontal, invisible belt that wraps around the middle of the earth and separates the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Thanks to these science-driven explorers, we gained understanding of the earth’s round shape, created more accurate maps, and developed the metric system! It also gave us the longitude and latitude geographic coordinate system of locating specific points on the earth's surface.

Today, the thirteen countries and three oceans that are home to the equator are known for stunning biodiversity, plentiful natural resources, and year-round hot weather. In Ecuador, fittingly named for being the country where the equator was discovered, visitors can even straddle the Northern and Southern Hemispheres with one foot in each! Learn all about the rich history of the countries, culture, and wildlife of the equator in this book perfect for young explorers and geography buffs.
