Blackest Night

Rosa has moved from the city to a small fishing village, beginning married life far from everything she knows. When her husband suddenly leaves her to renew his visa, she is left alone in their half-built home with only the men of the village and the jungle for company – all as the darkest night of the year draws in, the fabled noche negra. As evening light begins to fail, unease takes grip of Rosa: a knife goes missing, she hears movement in the treeline, and shadows of the past begin to haunt her mind…

Blackest Night is a thrilling tale of paranoia and suspicion from one of South America’s greatest living writers. In stark, pristine prose, Pilar Quintana transforms one woman’s isolation into a timeless meditation on fear, violence and the fragile boundary between danger and imagination.
