Flappers and Philosophers

Published in 1920, Flappers and Philosophers is the debut short story collection by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Released on the heels of his first novel, This Side of Paradise, the book solidified Fitzgerald’s reputation as the premier chronicler of the Jazz Age and the "Lost Generation."

The collection consists of eight stories that explore the shifting social landscape of post-WWI America. The "Flappers" represent the era’s rebellious, modern young women—characterized by bobbed hair, short skirts, and a disdain for Victorian decorum—while the "Philosophers" represent the intellectual and often disillusioned young men navigating a world of rapid change.
