In these seven stories, King covers a wide range of territory: a coroner returns to work after the death of her husband; a pregnant woman waits for her lover to get paroled; a school teacher is incensed when her ex-lover publishes a poem about her; an intern watches an office love affair crumble; a woman running from her past ends up as a movie extra in Prague; the victim of a stray bullet gets to thank the passer-by who helped her; and a ghost-chaser commits suicide and leaves his girlfriend to wonder why he did it. Through it all, King uses a sharp eye for detail and a wicked wit to capture the edges of human experience.
