President Roosevelt planted a redwood tree on Campbell Union High School grounds.In 1851, Ben Campbell bought 160 acres, which later became known as downtown. In 1878, Campbell sold his land for $5 an acre to a railroad company. In the late 1800's the city included numerous canneries and fruit packing facilities. The city was officially incorporated in 1952. In 1895, the Bank of Campbell was established, now the city's oldest commercial building. A third of Campbell was a part of the 1839 Alta Rancho Rinconada land grant. Campbell's Ainsley House is a restored English style building that is now a museum. Campbell was originally nicknamed "The Orchard City." The tree-lined driveway to the Campbell's ranch house is now Campbell Avenue.
