For a young professional on the way up in a British engineering firm in 1990, it was an offer Tom Hayes could not refuse: go to Bangladesh and find out if stories about the outfit’s corrupt practices in the country are true. It’s a secret mission given to him by the CEO of the company himself, but it plunges Tom into ethical and romantic dilemmas in a steamy tropical city convulsed with political unrest.

As events in Dhaka unfold, the young engineer becomes increasingly in thrall to an unscrupulous local fixer named Mokammel Haque and his mysterious daughter. While the country’s dictatorial regime teeters on the brink of collapse and the evidence of his firm’s corruption mounts, Tom is torn between denunciation and the tantalising prospect of a life-changing financial reward from the charismatic Haque and a romantic attachment to the man’s beautiful daughter.
