Daggers in Darkness

An alternate-history spy adventure from the New York Times bestselling author of the Emberverse. Book One of the Treasures of Tartary trilogy.

History changed in 1912 when Theodore Roosevelt won back the Presidency. By 1922, America has become a high-tech colossus. In this new world, elaborate airships cross the continent, radars sweep the sea lanes, and the Black Chamber—an ultra-secret intelligence and counter-espionage agency—watches from the shadows, keeping the Republic safe from its enemies.

Luz O'Malley Aróstegui and Ciara Whelan are married in all but law, raising four small daughters between assignments. They are also the Black Chamber's most effective and deadliest field team. After a period of domestic stability, they are called back into the fray.

Their plans are disrupted when a host of dead bodies starts appearing in Chinatown, and a flood of impossibly preserved medieval antiquities from China hits the market in exchange for millions of dollars. Even more disturbing is what the money raised from these sales is buying, and for whom. The money trail runs straight to the "Bloody Baron," the self-proclaimed heir to Genghis Khan and the new master of Mongolia.

From San Diego's glittering harbor, through the Bund's gaslit alleys and Shanghai's crowded streets to the inner sanctums of a new Mongolia, Daggers in Darkness opens a magnificent trilogy of espionage, wonder, and adventure.
