Abell's run-of-the-mill fourth whodunit featuring ex-detective Jake Jackson (after The Burial Place) is a step down from its predecessors. Jackson has moved to a farm in the English countryside and started a family with veterinarian Livia in hopes of escaping the harshness of urban life. His attempt at peace is thwarted when he learns about the suspicious disappearance of local nurse Claire Davidson. Jackson joins the search for Claire, and Chief Inspector McAllister, who's in charge of the investigation, welcomes his involvement, even as both cast a side eye at social media sleuths who come to town to report on the case. A tip from one influencer, however, leads Jackson to wonder whether Claire might have died after getting in the middle of the abusive relationship between local couple Paul and Louise Sansom. When another woman's corpse turns up in town, Jackson fears that a killing spree has either just begun or gone undetected for some time. Though Abell's characters remain lovable, subpar sleuthing and a clichéd motive for the killer make this the first real stumble in the Jake Jackson series. Here's hoping the next installment is a return to form.
