Achieving Common Ground

This book shows how teachers, using the primary documents of our history, help students grasp the recurrent points of conflict in American civic life. Students realize that most of these conflicts center around the principles underlying our constitutional system and the challenges of living up to them. Discussing how earlier Americans met or failed to meet these challenges, students build habits of civil conversation.
