Before the Name

There is a moment: brief, unannounced, available to anyone when you see something you know very well as if you have never seen it before. The familiar thing becomes strange. The named thing loses its name. And in that instant of not-knowing, something else becomes available, a clarity that the label, in its helpfulness, had been covering.

Before the Name is a book built entirely inside that moment.

The coordinate is an invitation to look elsewhere, to look again, to discover that what you have just read about a field or a flame or an ocean is also, simultaneously, about something that no field or flame or ocean has ever contained but that all of them, in their different ways, have always been pointing at.

For the reader who has always suspected that the material world, seen carefully enough, becomes transparent and that what it becomes transparent to is not something other than this world, but the depth of this world, finally visible.
