In the fourth volume of Beyond & A New World, Tod and Zoe return—this time not to distant worlds, but to the unfolding story of Earth itself. Commissioned by the Lady of the Garden, they incarnate within successive civilizations: from Neolithic villages and Pharaoh's Egypt to Rome, the medieval-modern world of Magdeburg, the Calusa kingdom of Florida after Spain's first encounter, the colonial Carolinas with their rice plantations, and finally the present-day United States. In each epoch they face the same test—to recognize one another across power's divides, to plant a seed of love amid oppression, and to leave behind a sign for the future.
