Descripción editorial

The war in South Africa was devastating for everyone and the casualties were more than just soldiers. This is a memoir of letters and poems written by the participants. It is heartfelt and often very emotional. It offers an insight and brief glimpse into the hardships faced by the men that serve on foreign lands. It documents the emotions and feelings that were elicited by homesickness and a fear of death. It is very inspiring and also very revealing. The outbreak of war in Europe had been expected and the government of South Africa was aware of the importance of their shared border with the Germans. The Prime Minister Botha told London that South Africa was able to defend itself so the Imperial Garrison should depart for France. Later the British government asked Botha whether his forces could invade German and South-West Africa, he said that they could and would. The book is a historically correct and true rendition and includes pages of historical knowledge. It has many interesting factual insights into the effort put into securing victory. It was Australia’s first entry into war and very traumatic for the country. A great historical reference that is truly authentic and sends a very serious message.
