Charlotte Temple

A popular novel first published in London in 1791 by the British-American writer Susanah, or Susanna, Rowson--the first best-seller in American literature based on a true story about a British officer who persuades a young lady to go to New York with him only to abandon her. The author has been described as "America's first woman novelist."
