Former Army chaplain Levi Holt keeps his world small on purpose. Fence lines. Feed schedules. The Montana ranch his uncle left him, where hard work almost drowns out the memory of a young soldier's final words, and the prayer that went unanswered on a road outside Kandahar. He hasn't stood behind a podium since. He plans to keep it that way.

Bitterroot's chamber director needs a veteran for the town's 250th Founders' Day celebration, and she needs the event to shine brightly enough to save the historic Grange Hall her grandfather loved. What she doesn't need is to fall for the guarded rancher who says no to her at every turn, then keeps showing up anyway.

But Annie has never met a closed door she didn't knock on twice. And when a fallen soldier's mother writes to say she's coming to Montana, asking for the chaplain her son wrote home about, Levi must face the one conversation he's spent eighteen months avoiding. Add a stranger at his gate claiming half of the only home he has left, and the man who counsels others through their storms is suddenly standing in the middle of his own.

As Founders' Day draws near, Levi will have to decide whether a shaken faith can still be a true one and whether the woman who refused to give up on her town might also refuse to give up on him.
