Across a bridge, beneath the cherry blossom, sits the Marble Café.

Here, a woman writes in her notebook while a young waiter prepares her regular hot chocolate. Around them, customers come and go, each carrying a story of their own.

A walk along the river. Cooking the perfect tamagoyaki. Ordering a hot chocolate. Forgetting to remove your nail polish. The smallest, most ordinary acts can lead to unexpected encounters – and change a life without us ever knowing it.

Told through twelve beautifully interconnected stories, HOT CHOCOLATE ON THURSDAY follows the customers and staff whose lives cross at the Marble Café, gradually revealing the invisible threads that connect them.

Tender, surprising and full of Michiko Aoyama’s unique insight into everyday life, this is a novel about the extraordinary connections hidden inside the ordinary – and the countless ways we change one another without even realising it.
