Animator and designer Watson debuts with a tender inspirational volume showcasing drawings of his popular online character Mr. Skelly, a cartoony (think early black-and-white Looney Tunes) skeleton living out normal scenes of everyday life, captioned and thought-bubbled with ruminations about how one ought to treasure the time one has on Earth. While the tone can be cloying at times, the drawings are calming and cute. Most are gently illuminated outdoor scenes with Mr. Skelly lounging as he gives cogent if well-worn advice like "sometimes the only way out is through" and "what happens to you is not who you are," though occasionally the book offers up a visceral gut punch as Mr. Skelly's memento mori nature suddenly reasserts itself, with him assiduously noting that "all your worries will stop someday" and "maybe don't exist in the future worried about." An elaborate final sequence about pondering what death will be like (basically like being a cared-for child again, the author hopes) wraps up with Mr. Skelly lighting a stovetop burner the old-timey way, with a match, so he can put on a kettle of tea, a conclusion that manages to movingly transcend its hipsterish trad-ism and elicit a wistful sigh. This pulls at the heartstrings.
