When a crisis at the clinic compels Mac to take a holiday, he turns to a surprising old friend to look for answers. With a spay cast and hand-tied flies by a rural stream, Mac returns to his roots, before Jo and his role as Furry Friends's principal veterinarian—and revisits two of the greatest losses of his life to understand why the latest tragedy has left him feeling completely lost.

Whilst Mac sorts through his doubts, Jo feels some of her own, and Mac soon realizes that she has begun to question her role at the clinic—and whether she has a future as his partner going forward. As Mac finds himself again at a loss for communication skills precisely when he most needs words, he also finds himself struggling to treat a patient suffering from a condition no medical skills can cure—that of chronic loneliness.
