Charles Robert Maturin was an Irish Protestant clergyman and a writer of Gothic plays and novels. Charles Robert Maturin’s first works were produced under the pseudonym Charles Dennis Jasper Murphy, but they were not popular. However, Walter Scott noticed his works. Owing to the support of Walter Scott, his novels and plays became to be famous for a public. 

The action of this novel began in the autumn of 1816 in Ireland, in County Wicklow , where a student at Trinity College Dublin John Melmoth arrived to visit his dying uncle, or more simply, to take possession of his estate. However, in bequest, in addition to purely practical points there were two mystical properties: the first was to destroy the portrait hanging in his office with the signature "J. Melmoth, 1646 "; the second - to find and burn the manuscript stored in a bureau drawer.
