Mrs. Rule's Foundlings

In a respectable Clapham neighborhood, the formidable Mrs. Hannah Rule earns her living as an expert cook and laundress, moving in and out of fashionable households while guarding her privacy with almost comic severity. To her curious and resentful neighbor, Mrs. Collins, she is unsociable, mysterious, and oddly knowing; yet beneath that guarded exterior lies a woman of deep faith, hard-won independence, and practical charity. When Mrs. Rule invites Mrs. Collins to tea, the encounter opens into a searching conversation about a book that asks what people truly live for, and whether their lives are devoted to God or only to themselves. The challenge of those questions soon becomes real. Mrs. Rule lends Mrs. Collins five pounds to redeem her furniture, then begins living out the book's demands through acts of humble service, exacting honesty, and uncompromising cleanliness. A comic quarrel over a saucepan and an apple dumpling exposes the gulf between empty talk and disciplined goodness, while Mrs. Rule's care turns toward those who genuinely need help, including the poor young cabinet-maker's wife, Ellen. As Ellen learns housework, self-reliance, and the dignity of useful labor, she grows under Mrs. Rule's patient guidance into a capable young woman, and the story becomes a warm, morally pointed portrait of Christian duty, self-denial, and everyday kindness.
