For two hundred and thirty-seven years, I've avoided unnecessary obligations, modern bureaucracy, and anything that reminds me I'm no longer ruling a principality.

Then early one rainy morning I nearly run over Helen.

She's young, sweet, and entirely too careless with her own safety. By the time I leave her elementary-school classroom, one thing is perfectly clear.

So I do the logical thing. I volunteer as the school crossing guard, show up every morning and afternoon in an Italian suit and high-vis vest, and make certain Helen gets across the road in one piece.

The whole county thinks it's hilarious.

I don't care. I've waited centuries for her. I can survive the fashion crime of a fluorescent vest.
