Old Greek Stories

Greek myths retold for children by an American schoolmaster: Prometheus and the fire, the flood, Io, Arachne, Perseus and the Gorgon, Atalanta, Theseus and the Minotaur. Baldwin keeps each story to a few pages and to the shape the Greeks gave it, without the Victorian habit of apologising for the gods. It was written for the schoolroom and reads aloud better than most books that were not. Forty-five plates after painters from Delacroix to Moreau follow the myths from Prometheus to the Minotaur.
