Bis in die zweite Hälfte des achtzehnten Jahrhunderts waren die
großen Flüsse Apure, Payara, Arauea und Meta in Europa kaum
dem Namen nach bekannt, ja weniger als in den vorhergehenden
Jahrhunderten, als der tapfere Felipe de Urre und die Eroberer von
Tocuyo durch die Llanos zogen, um jenseits des Apure die große
Stadt des Dorado und das reiche Land Omaguas, das Tombuctu
des neuen Continents, aufzusuchen.
