A pompous head waiter discovers a departed guest's luggage stuffed with manuscripts and, after seven scrupulous years, sells the lot to a publisher — Dickens's sly excuse for a garland of stories, among them 'His Boots,' one of the loveliest things he ever wrote about a child.
