They have an instant attraction, yet they hate each other because Violet's mother executed Xaden's father for killing Brennan. Jack, a fellow cadet, tries to kill Violet as she crosses the parapet, reflecting the war college's fierce competition, but Dain saves her. He encourages her to join the scribes and adds her and her new companion Rhiannon to his team. At the last minute, his squad is moved from the Second Wing to the Fourth, under Xaden's command.
