Wildlife photographer Matilda Sweet hadn't planned to return to Plimmer Valley, but after one spectacularly bad decision (involving a man), she's back at Magnolia Manor with a bruised ego, no plan, and Padma, her sharp-tongued fruit bat familiar who has absolutely no filter.

To make ends meet, Matilda is working at the Sweet Tooth, her family's charming sweet shop: complete with its secret magical back room.

When someone dies in store and the local police officer decides she's the most convenient suspect, Matilda has no choice but to clear her name. Armed with her camera, her water magic, and a family who all have very strong opinions, she starts digging for the truth.

But in a town like Plimmer Valley, secrets don't stay buried for long.
