A Comprehensive Study Guide of The First 90 Days, Updated and Expanded
The first 90 days in a new assignment is important and is a determining factor of success or failure. Watkins writes that the root causes of failure in transitions are within the understanding of an individual regarding his new role and its opportunities and pitfalls. His strengths and vulnerabilities also play a large role in his success in his new role. Watkins argues that failure is never only about the flaws of a leader, rather his inability to understand the demands of his new role and his inflexibility to adapt to these demands. Watkins recommends systematic methods that lessen the likelihood of failure and to enable the leader to reach the break-even point faster.
Michael Watkins divided his book into ten chapters. Each chapter’s title is one essential step in this transition period. The first chapter is entitled, Prepare Yourself. Watkins encourages leaders to make a mental break from their old role and prepare to take on the new one. According to Watkins, the biggest pitfall a leader faces is when he assumes that the keys he used for his previous successes will still be the same keys he needs for his new role. There is real danger is sticking to what you know and working hard at it. Miserable failure is imminent. Watkins then advises to accelerate your learning. Learn as fast as you can. A leader should take time to understand the operations of his new role as well as the organizational culture and politics. A leader must be systematic and focused about what to learn and how to do so efficiently.
