The Great God Pan

A Victorian surgeon performs a delicate brain operation on a young woman, intending to let her glimpse the world beyond material reality — "to see the great god Pan." What follows is a chain of destruction spreading through London society, traced by the novella's fragmented, multi-narrator structure toward a source of ancient, amoral horror. First published in 1894, The Great God Pan scandalized reviewers on release and went on to influence H.P. Lovecraft and the whole tradition of cosmic horror. A foundational work of weird fiction.
