Director Halloway has built a perfect world in Geneva: a "Staid" society where pain is chemically erased, aging is cured, and the environment is frozen in a sterile stasis. But Dr. Senna Kovic, a neuro-architect, has committed the ultimate crime: she designed a park that made people feel sad.

Diagnosed with "Maladaptive Resiliency," Senna is exiled to the savage, storm-battered wasteland of Tasmania. There, she expects to die. Instead, she finds The Rhizome—a subterranean resistance living in the heat of decomposing compost and lighting their tunnels with bioluminescent moss.

While Geneva starves under the assault of a fungal super-strain, the exiles discover they are not alone. A heartbeat signal is pulsing from Mars, where a lost colony has evolved into something terrifyingly efficient.

Now, Senna must bridge two worlds. She holds the seeds that can save Earth from famine, but to use them, she must dismantle the cage of safety she once helped build.
