London, summer 1889.

Nine months have passed since Inspector Flint killed Jack the Ripper.

Now the murders have begun again.

Across the capital, bodies are being discovered in scenes of escalating savagery, each killing more depraved than the last. To a terrified public, there can be only one explanation: the Ripper has returned, and his death toll now stands at nine.

But Flint and Locke know the truth.

Jack the Ripper is dead.

And yet the new murders bear every mark of his handiwork, save for one chilling detail. At each crime scene, a mirror has been deliberately smashed.
Is it a signature? A warning? Or a message intended for the two inspectors themselves?

As panic spreads through London and their superiors demand a swift arrest, Flint and Locke are drawn into a case that seems to defy reason. Worse still, Locke's increasingly erratic behaviour threatens to destroy both the investigation and the fragile partnership between them.

But beneath the murders lies something darker than imitation. Before they can face it, they must uncover the meaning of the shattered mirrors and confront an impossible question:
