Jane Austen's unfinished "The Watsons" completed by her niece: Emma Watson comes home to a dying father, three sisters and a neighbourhood that has already priced her. Catherine Hubback was Austen's niece and worked from the family's memory of how it was to go on. The join is visible, and the book is the earliest attempt to finish an Austen fragment. Fifty-five plates by painters from Gainsborough to Rossetti, ranging across cottage interiors, portraits, and wooded landscapes, extend the domestic world of the Watsons into the visual culture of Austen's century.
