Ao completar 50 anos de existência, a Sociedade Brasileira de Cirurgia da Mão (SBCM) resgata seu passado neste registro histórico preparado por dois importantes cirurgiões de mão brasileiros, Osvandré Lech e Fernando Baldy dos Reis.
Sterling Bunnell já falava, em 1944, da necessidade de aprimoramento dos traumas da mão decorrentes da operação de máquinas durante a industrialização. As guerras também fizeram aumentar a incidência desse tipo de trauma. A American Society for Hand Surgery já havia sido fundada em 1946, e o Clube da Mão britânico já se reunia desde 1952. No Brasil, cirurgiões formados em meio à Segunda Guerra Mundial, especializados em ortopedia, cirurgia plástica e microcirurgia decidiram: queriam se especializar na cirurgia da mão, de maneira a oferecer a melhor reabilitação possível aos pacientes. Em 1959, Henrique Bulcão de Moraes, Lauro Barros de Abreu, Danilo Gonçalves, Alípio Pernet e Orlando Graner se articularam para fundar a SBCM. O apoio de renomados cirurgiões de mão como Joseph Boyes,William Metcalf, Erick Moberg, Kauko Vainio, Guy Pulvertaft, Ronaldo Carneiro, Graham Stack, Dieter Buck-Gramcko, Raoul Tubiana permitiu sua consolidação, com representação na Federação Internacional das Sociedades de Cirurgia da Mão, e a realização de importantes congressos internacionais. Toda a história da instituição, com seus principais personagens, suas conquistas e dificuldades ao longo dos últimos 50 anos, são descritas em detalhes nesta obra.

In its 50th anniversary, the Brazilian Society of Hand Surgery (SBCM) recovers its past in this historical registry prepared by two important Brazilian hand surgeons, Osvandré Lech and Fernando Baldy dos Reis.
Sterling Bunnell had already defended, in 1944, the need to scientifically improve the treatment of hand traumas resulting from machine operation in the industrialization era. The wars also had an impact in the incidence of this kind of trauma. The American Society for Hand Surgery had been founded in 1946, and the British Club of the Hand had been holding its meetings since 1952. In Brazil, surgeons trained in the midst of the Second World War, specializing in orthopedics, plastic and microsurgery decided: they wanted to specialize for hand surgery, so as to provide the best rehabilitation possible to patients. In 1959, Henrique Bulcão de Moraes, Lauro Barros de Abreu, Danilo Gonçalves, Alípio Pernet and Orlando Graner were articulated to create the SBCM. The support of renowned hand surgeons such as Joseph Boyes, William Metcalf, Erick Moberg, Kauko Vainio, Guy Pulvertaft, Ronaldo Carneiro, Graham Stack, Dieter Buck- Gramcko, and Raoul Tubiana led to its consolidation with representation at the International Federation of Societies of Hand Surgery, and implementation of major international conferences.
