All her life, Melanie la Plante has had to content herself with being second best. Her younger sister, Roxanne has always been the pretty one. Mel has just about resigned herself to living out a humdrum life in Lost Soul Landing when a mysterious fortune teller, Madame Cauchemar, gifts her a Dreamcatcher and her luck begins to change.

Lucille, a red head from the circus, who befriends her, assures her that this particular Dreamcatcher can make all her dreams come true.

But when Roxanne comes down with a virulent disease two days before the event of the season and Mel gets a once in a lifetime chance to enter the Miss Southern Bayou Pageant in her place, she starts to realise that there’s no such thing as a free lunch.
