Descripción editorial

This book is about an extraordinary character whose journalistic byline was a household name 100 years ago.

Ellis Ashmead-Bartlett was a flamboyant, daring war correspondent, although perpetually broke and with very expensive tastes.

He went off to cover the war in the Dardanelles for the mainstream London press in 1915, and witnessed the Anzacs storm ashore at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. He wrote with colour and flair of the outstanding heroism and bravery of the young Australians.

His scoops made headlines in Britain and in Australia. His dispatches were reprinted and circulated throughout Australia and Australian schools.

He also took vivid, shocking photos, and amazingly shot the only known surviving film footage of Gallipoli, excerpts of which are included in this new edition.

Ellis soon recognised the futility and horror of the conflict, and was determined to expose this by writing a devastating exposé of the campaign, but was blocked by censorship. He then passed his report on to a visiting young Keith Murdoch to deliver on his behalf to British Prime Minister Asquith. The report was taken from Murdoch en route to Britain, but Murdoch put it together from memory, delivering it to Asquith as his own version.

Elllis Ashmead-Bartlett toured Australia in 1916 giving packed-out lectures and showing his Gallipoli films.

This new and updated Anzac Centenary Edition iBook contains film footage of Ashmead-Bartlett’s arrival in Australia, parts of his lecture films footage, and most importantly, the treasured original Gallipoli film - now a prized treasure of the Australian War Memorial.
