“God's Pinatas”
a Drama by: Phil Addis
Synopsis
It is a hot summer day in a small town. Two women are in a same sex marriage. RAVEN is an alcoholic, struggling with an abusive past. ROXY is married to Raven. The marriage is nearing it's finish line. Ultimatums need to be met.
ROSE is Roxy's Aunt. She lives with Roxy and Raven. She is in the stages of Alzheimer's. Her stay is seriously weighing on Raven and Roxy's relationship. Roxy is supporting an unemployed and alcoholic induced Raven. While Roxy is looking to get some solace, she suffers a nervous breakdown and must be admitted for medical evaluations and counseling. This leaves Raven and Rose to feud it out. Rose and Raven begin their familiar banter, clashing on every subject matter, especially religion. Raven drinks while Rose teeters in and out of lucidity,
Their neighbor, SUGI who was born and raised in Japan is convinced that he is Japanese, even though he is of Anglo Saxon decent. He is insistent on getting Rose out of this bad environment. Sugi has committed his love for
Rose and wants to marry her, leaving Raven alone. Rose reminds Raven; “It can be very lonely with one set of footsteps.”
After Rose moves in with Sugi, a very drunk and lonely Raven, plots a devious way to get Rose back into her life. Raven quotes Rose. “It’s part of the master plan.” She also needs to regain Roxy’s trust, so she can move back in.
Unbeknownst to Raven and Rose, they need each other.
Raven and Rose must confront the thief; Alcohol and Alzheimer’s. Raven realizes that it takes a whole lot of courage to stop drinking.
“Courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day, saying, I’ll try again, tomorrow.”
A poignant, serious and funny, story. There is humor in tragedy.
