An unnamed narrator sets out innocently enough on a follow-the-road kind of drive in the Redwood Empire in Northern California. Taking a mountain road off historic Highway 101 he stops at a little place called Millbank and that's where it all begins. Enchanted by the serenity found in a grove of towering redwood trees he follows an impulse to stay on a few days at Millbank's Hopkins Lodge. In time, but not immediately, led by the mysterious singing of staunch old Protestant hymns he meets John Phillip Sousa, a local follow of Native American heritage. From there on it's a mad roll into a world of sexual exploration that leads to Wigwam's casually strange New World reinterpretations of the old, Paylor's neo-rethink in mental health, and Father John Waterfall"s dilemma in trying to be loyal to a church he doesn't like. The theology is more or less kooky, the psychology a little bent (maybe) and the morality measured in modern day relevance to almost nothing at all but the sex is fun, imaginative in exploiting natural inquisition, and certainly hot. Not for the sexually righteous but for the laid back fella with a good grip on his reality, it's reading for a hot afternoon or a warm cozy night under the fleece of a willing inclination. Oh yeah, baby.
