How many times have we, as Christians, felt like our lives are stifled, frustrated with a sense of insignificance, or maybe simply like we have hit a wall in our walk? This is what we call, “Christian Constipation.” This sense of feeling bloated and uncomfortable with an inner sense that something is off often is caused by our misunderstanding of our holistic purpose as a believer. Too often we have been taught or maybe we have assimilated the obvious and overt purposes of being a Christian: be good, come to Church; love Jesus; serve; give; and forgive. All of these truths are central to a disciple’s life, yet they fall short of producing a sense of inner peace and eternal significance. As we find ourselves living in these constructs, slowly but surely we lose passion for God, get frustrated with our current Church family, and often begin to drift away from both. We sense there “has to be more,” but we are doing all that we know how to do. In this conundrum we either hunker down and bite the bullet or we make a change in our spiritual environment hoping this will jump start something within us. Unfortunately, neither of these actions can release us from the spiritual constipation within.
